A wiring diagram is a simple visual representation of the physical connections and physical layout of an electrical system or circuit. It shows how the electrical wires are interconnected and can also show where fixtures and components may be connected to the system.
The wiring diagram lets you define the different installation components and locations (cabinets, control panels, consoles, connection boxes, etc.) and gives you a synoptic, functional view of the installation. The terminal strips and cabling connections between locations can be defined at the beginning, during or at the end of the project design. The length of the pathways can also be defined by the user and thus serve as a default value, for all cables within the given pathway.
Associated circuit protection, control and distribution devices within a building wiring system are subject to voltage, current and functional specification. Wiring safety codes vary by locality, country or region. The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is attempting to harmonise wiring standards amongst member countries, but significant variations in design and installation requirements still exist.
A schematic shows the plan and function for an electrical circuit, but is not concerned with the physical layout of the wires. Wiring diagrams show how the wires are connected and where they should located in the actual device, as well as the physical connections between all the components.
