bio

jenny c. lares is a spoken word poet based in Washington, DC. She is the executive director and one of the founders of Sulu DC, an underground network and monthly showcase of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) artists in the Washington, DC area. A former open mic host at Busboys and Poets, she has performed at local DC venues such as Busboys and Poets, Artomatic, Mothertongue, and Bloombars, at the Bowery Poetry Club (NYC), the Asian Arts Initiative (Philadelphia), and several colleges throughout the East Coast and Midwest.

Her work was recently published in the anthology, Walang Hiya…literature taking risks toward liberatory practice, published by Carayan Press. Her poems have appeared in TAYO Literary Magazine, The Lantern Review and on Bourgeon, an online arts magazine. She self-published her chapbook, Three Generations, in 2010. Most recently, Ms. Lares was recognized as one of 15 AAPI women fiercely redefining woman leadership by the National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum (NAPAWF) and Angry Asian Man.
