february love poem #3
no artwork this time. but this next poem was written back in 2006. it was inspired by conversations with friends on organizing and the men we were attracted to because of their politics and ended up being disappointed in because of the disconnect between their words and their actions. this poem really is a precursor to what became the poem, “love & politics”. video of “love & politics” is on the videos page.
political man
my Asian American brother
progressive as you are
supportive
never obscuring my experience at the table
i can’t read your mind
you march with me in the day
link arms as one
but sleep with someone who worships you like a god at night
decolonize recolonize her mind
i thought you were better than that.
should i check my expectations at the door?
be relieved that you’re not a figment of my imagination
that aside from who you fuck your politics are in line?
that’s bullshit and you know it.
can’t hide behind democratic-socialist-militant philosophies
i see you
can you see yourself?
my Asian American brother
progressive as you say you are
you heighten my insecurities—
fierce sisters want to be loved too
but i’ve spent too much time on this topic
come on, we have work to do.
